چکیده

For optimum production it is important to plant approved cane varieties in suitable environments. The indiscriniinatc planting of varieties which have not been screened for undesirable features can lead lo heavy financial losses being incurred, not only by the individual, but by an entire sugar industry. 111 order to prevent such disastrous consequences phytosanitary regulations are laid down, and for their effective enforcement it is essential to have reliable means for identifying the different varieties. The search for methods of separation and identification has now been carried out for over half a century.

Current Status of Research on Sugarcane Yellow Leaf Syndrome in Southern Africa

In the 1960s, yellowing symptoms in sugarcane were seen throughout East Africa. This was called ‘yellow-wilt’, a condition first described in Tanzania in 1962. The symptoms appear identical to those of Yellow Leaf Syndrome (YLS). In South Africa symptoms of YLS were first observed in 1994 and were conspicuous in varieties CP66/1043, N22 and N26, intermediate in N27 and less conspicuous in NCo37...

Conventional Sugarcane Breeding in South Africa: Progress and Future Prospects

Initial sugarcane production in South Africa relied on imported varieties. When imported varieties succumbed to diseases, the industry established the South African Research Institute (SASRI) with the mandate to develop sugarcane varieties. The popular and highly successful varieties, NCo310 and NCo376 were selected from crosses imported from India. NCo310 and NCo376 were grown successfully in ...

The Use of Tissue Blots to Screen for Varietal Resistance to Ratoon Stunting Disease of Sugarcane

No trials are currently conducted at SASEX to screen genotypes for resistance to ratoon stunting disease (RSD), a disease that is well established in most sugarcane growing regions of the world and considered to cause more yield losses worldwide than any other sugarcane disease. In South Africa, field trials have demonstrated that yield reductions under rainfed conditions can be as high as 40% ...

Anatomical Structure Study of Aerial Organs in Four Populations of Urtica dioica L.

Urtica dioica L. is an Iranian native pharmacological plant for which little attention has been paid to the anatomical structure. Medical applications of this plant include diabetes therapy, digestive improvement, anemia and kidney disease therapy. Because climatic conditions can affect the anatomical structure which in turn affects pharmacological compositions, research on the anatomy of this ...

The Susceptibility of Varieties to Mosaic and the Effect of Planting Date on Mosaic Incidence in South Africa

The majority of South African sugarcane varieties are resistant to mosaic but two widely grown varieties, NCo 376 and.NCo 293, are highdy susceptible. Application of Temik (aldicarb) to the soil at planting was not beneficial in controlling mosaic. Mosaic transmission was restricted to January to May but very rapid spread only occurred in mid January to March, i.e. late summer and early autumn....
